About Studio 52

I'm so glad you're checking out Studio52 jewellery and finding out why I do, what I do!

Studio52 was born out of a combined love of making art and an urge to create something beautiful and interesting from non traditional materials including industrial cast offs that were destined for landfill.

I’m Al and I have always practiced crafting, whether it be during many successful periods of producing fashion from a stall at Sydney’s Paddington Markets (‘recession dressin’ in the 80s followed by men’s attire and a line of children’s clothing in the 90s), or later in my spare time whilst working in radio and journalism.

Now in my 60s, my children are fully fledged adults, but as many of my friends embrace retirement, I wanted to go back to my artistic roots of design and experimentation.

I came across rubber as a medium pretty much by chance, and discovered that it has interesting properties that lends itself well to contemporary jewellery, and to be honest, it has enabled me to totally exceed my expectations as a creative outlet.

And aside from the creativity, there is satisfaction in transforming salvaged rubber including bike and heavy vehicle inner tubes, in the knowledge that by veering from their initial purpose, their life is extended, diverting them from landfill.

And the result? Well, Studio52 pieces are definitely made for the person who has a love of art and design, and who’s not afraid to be noticed.

Thank you so much for taking an interest in Studio52. Your support allows me to express myself in new and exciting ways by creating wearable art for you.

You can probably tell that I’m super proud of my brand Studio52. It’s edgy, artistic and current and if you’re the same, or aspire to be, you're in the right place!
